Henry felt as if he was at the dentist’s office.

Not because of the place per say or its look, but rather because of the waiting time and because he was sitting in a waiting room. Madame Rose’s interior looked basically like something out of home digest. Well at least the hallway and the waiting room that he happened to be sitting in. White walls, comfortable chairs, a pair of pot plants two coffee tables with various magazines stacked on them, probably for the people who waited around too peruse a big reception behind which nobody was sitting. At least at the moment, the secretary was either gone to get something or was not here yet. There were also two pictures on the walls. Both were artistic renderings of a couple in a haughty embrace.

But that was not why Henry was here. Henry was here because he was looking for a job. Not as a bouncer but rather as an escort. A friend had told him about the business and that they were hiring new ‘entertainers’. It was good money, more then he could make as a construction worker and certainly as a bouncer. It was money that he would need. For starters he was planning on enrolling back into college – making sure that he got his economics degree, and secondly he would need the money to pay his weight in the Pride.

His Pride…yeah things were still decidedly tense there. Henry sighed. To a degree it was his fault. He should not have left so abruptly and he should have definitely stayed in contact. Now it was up to him to take the beatings that they would dish out. But for the moment he would deal with getting a job. It was an important first step in proving that he was staying and that he was more than reliable enough too trusted with Pride business.

Not that Henry had been an escort before – so far he had only done that as a enthusiastic amateur. Well there was his brief foray into pornography but aside from two or three shots he never really did something. He leaned over and picked up one of the magazines, he checked the time as he did so, a few minutes before half past ten. So he still had a few minutes before his interview started.

Jack was engaged in a silent and ultimately doomed struggle with Dri about his wardrobe. He had made several attempts to explain to her that the 'I'm the Muscle' clothes that she liked to mock--white shirts, black blazers, plain loose slacks--had become the uniform for bodyguards and security staff for a good reason. They were formal and unobtrusive, they allowed concealing a good number of weapons, and most importantly people recognized them instantly as belonging to Security and reacted accordingly.

Dri's counterargument boiled down to pointing and giggling. It was a surprisingly effective negotiating tactic.

Tonight Jack was dressed in his latest attempt at compromise, a well-cut suit of black silk over a loose, lightweight shirt that made it look considerably less formal and a bit too L.A. for Jack's personal tastes. But he was giving it a try, and so resisted tugging at the too-short jacket hem as he stuck his head into the room where Henry was sitting and his eyebrows went up in surprise. "Oh," mild, a little displeased, "here you are. What idiot put you in the Bigoted Tradesman Room?" The rat shook his head and gestured for Henry to join him. "C'mon, I'll get you up to the main part of the house, Ben's probably looking for you."

He led Henry up a flight of stairs and to a small, expensively simple sitting room. "Here, have a seat? She'll be along shortly, I'd think."

Henry had been busy flipping through a magazine when he heard a door open, his eyes immediately looked up and he saw a man enter the room. The guy was…rather snappily dressed. He looked more as if he was going to go to a formal dinner then work in an Escort business. Then again considering the Escort business he would not be particularly surprised to find out that the man really was going to some formal affair. Luckily Henry had chosen to wear something a bit more formal then his usual garb as well – he was trying to make a good impression after all.

“Tradesman room?” he asked as he the guy seemed to utter a rather displeased noise. Had he stumbled into the wrong room? Apparently so, as the stranger gestured for him to follow. He did as prompted while wondering who Ben was, since he was told that he would be meeting with a woman. Perhaps it was short for something? Although for the life of him he could recall or come up with any female name that started or could be shorted to Ben. He followed the other man, the faint scent of a shifter emanating from him, to another room.

The second room was much more decorated, easily passing of an office of a high end stock broker. Basically a rich person. Although he had to give credit to whomever it was that owned this place, it really looked and smelled nice. “Nice place” he commented as he examined the room.

“She?” the Lion asked as he turned to face the other male, hands in his pockets. His eyes briefly lingering on him before he turned away, examining another piece of furniture. To be fair this was probably one of the more upscale places that Henry had visited. If not the most upscale place. In a way he felt relieved that he chose to dress up for the occasion. It made it easier for him to fit in if nothing else.

Jack grinned over at Henry, "Yeah, we stick people there when it's too clear that they disapprove of what's going on here, but not strongly enough to refuse our filthy filthy money. It's a good place to let them stew for a while before it's time to talk price on whatever it is. Plus?" A quick upward flick of his eyebrows, "Messing with bigots is funny."

As he got Henry settled in the sitting room Jack asked, "You want a drink? Coffee? Scotch? Ben, Benedict, is the butler. Go ahead and laugh at him about that, it makes him adorably furious. And 'she' is Adrianna, the owner. She'll be along any second."

Henry chuckled at the man’s humor.

“So people who disprove of your…and my possible future employment, actually come here to disapprove? Or to get money from us?” he commented slightly amused by the concept “Figures they do…” he said still highly bemused. Oh he liked this guy – especially the somewhat cocky attitude. He did slightly quirk his head when he was asked if he’d like a beer. To be fair he’d love a beer right now, but somehow he had the feeling that it would clash with the decorum.

“Scotch would be nice” he said as he considered the offer that was made “Ben, or Bennett, the Butler and Adrianna the boss” he spoke their names as if he was trying them out for size. He sat down on the black leather sofa and leaned on the side. Adrianna, had quite the ring to it, he imagined a rather classy woman with that name. But then again he also knew of an Elizabeth, with whom he hung out rather regularly, and Elizabeth was a transvestite prostitute who catered to men that liked it ‘rough but with style’ as she put it. The moral of that story? Don’t put too much faith into a name.

“What about you? Got a name or shall I just go with tall, dark, handsome and or cocky?” he asked somewhat mischievously as he once more eyed the male. “I have to say I am curious about the type of clientele this place attracts, and who better to ask then an already working…fellow?” Henry confessed. To be fair he had hoped to meet with an already working escort, figure out what their deal was and how they ticked. Tall, dark and cocky here seemed rather confident, not to mention rather pleased with his job and odds are that there are worse guys to get advice from

"Sure, plenty of them. Companies who are far too moral to dirty themselves with the vampire sex trade, but sure wouldn't mind getting our five-figure a month alcohol concession. She likes to make them meet her here rather than going to them, just to mess with them."

Jack poured Henry a scotch, grabbed a six-ounce bottle of club soda for himself. Working, after all. "And I'm Jack, I'm head of security. I don't work directly with clients, though, so I can't give you deep insight into that. Just what I see around here day to day." They'd talked about it, and Jack had agreed that okay, in theory he didn't mind working with a client if it ever came up. He just didn't think it would ever come up.

As he extended Henry's glass to him, the cuff of Jack's jacket tugged upward an inch, as did his shirt sleeve, which revealed a strange, evenly-marbled scarring on his wrist and disappearing up his arm under the cloth. If Henry were being observant, he might notice that a hint of that same kind of scarring was visible above the open collar of his shirt, and on his other wrist. Jack ignored it, or seemed to, and said, "If there are questions you want to toss out, I can at least give them a shot."

“Henry” he introduced himself as he took the glass with the drink from the male. He was mildly surprised that Jack was not one of the escorts, but rather the head of security. The surprise however did not distract him enough to notice that there was some sort of blemish on the man’s skin, on his arm to be specific. But before he could make out any details the mark disappeared right under the sleeve of the man, as he leaned back. “Sorry I just assumed that you were one of the Escorts” he apologized hoping that he had not insulted the other guy.

“Questions?” he said as he considered the offer, he took a sip of the scotch. The liquid burned his throat a bit as he swallowed it, but he gave no outward sign of displeasure or any sign that might have been interpreted that he disliked the drink. Or that he felt uncomfortable for that matter. “Since you’ve offered, I am mostly curious about the clients” Henry gave voice to his thoughts “I’m sure that you cannot reveal their identities or go into any specifics about them, but Madam Rose caters to both regular humans and to the supernatural folk, yes?” he inquired

There was a vast difference when dealing between a regular Joe and a three hundred year old vampire. Or an alpha shifter for that matter and Henry had learned that the hard way. If he was going to take the plunge into this profession then he was going to do so with his eyes wide open.

“More specifically if you, or rather Adrianna, hire me what is expected of me? Dinner dates, parties, sex? I guess that I am asking where the limits are, if any” he explained as he took another sip of the scotch, the cubicles of ice keeping the liquid cool. “Or are those questions that I should be asking Adrianna?”

"I'm not offended." And he wasn't. You couldn't work here and get all sniffy about people wondering if you were a hooker. "But most of those are things you really need to talk to Adrianna about."

He smiled again, they came easier to him than they used to. "I can tell you, though, that in the end she's looking more for people who can be discreet, charming, and amusing than ones who are pretty and can fuck like crazed monkeys. Sex is easy, it's everywhere. Anybody who can afford to use our service can afford to get laid any way they like, with any kink, no problem. And probably already have. By the time they come here, it's because they're looking for something more than a fantastic lay. What that 'more' is varies from client to client. But if you want to work here, you've got to be able to give it."

"So if you want to impress Adrianna, have opinions but be able to express them well and graciously. Know how to have a polite intellectual argument. Know and demonstrate the difference between 'sensual', 'erotic', and 'rawly sexual'. Be interesting, because just being hot as hell and willing to fuck anything that'll pay well enough isn't going to hack it." It was a speech that Jack had given once or twice before, he still wasn't sure he was good at it, but it seemed only fair to warn new applicants that most of what they thought they knew about this job was wrong.

Henry chuckled a bit before he once more placed the glass with the scotch to his lips. Of course he would be applying to the one Escort service in all of Seattle that actually valued substance as much as it did physical interaction. Henry never really had issue with the physical side of things; it was the intellectual bit that would have the lion contorting in pain. Well maybe not in pain, but he hardly believed that he would have anything relevant to say if his date happened to be a law professor – not that he was stupid, he just lacked the necessary information to deal or converse in certain areas.

“So…let me get this straight, you guys not only like your escorts stimulating the body, but also the mind?” He did not have an issue with this per say, he was merely taken aback with the fact that they bothered. The rest he was fine with, kinks he could deal with, and he had assumed that discretion was going to be the better part of valor. Not that he was planning on screaming the names of his potential customers aloud while yelling that he was a hooker to begin with. “That’s certainly adds a fresh twist to things” he added as he placed his drink onto the glass table in front of him.

“I guess, that that does cover all of the questions that I can ask of you doesn’t it?” he quipped a bit amused that he seemed to be getting most of his information from the Head of Security rather than the vampire who was running the show to begin with.

“Unless you’d like to satisfy another of my curiosities that is?” he asked as his eyes lingered on the man and fellow lycanthrope. The scent of his beast was faint but Henry had still picked up on it in the hallway and on the stairs. Now however, as he had spent quite some time in a room with the man, he could still smell the faint scent. Not that he was about to up and ask the man about his lycanthrope status – for some of them it could be a sore subject. “How long have you been Head of Security? Seems like quite the job”

"Mind, power, even in spirit, sometimes. Again, if you can afford to pay up to five figures for a single night's company, it's not just because you want to fuck a pretty girl or boy, no matter how kinky you're feeling. It's because you have a fantasy and you want it fulfilled beautifully. Perfectly. Sure, sex is part of it. Some of our clients even think it's the main point. But the truth is that for the escorts, the sex is the easiest and least-important part. What matters is meeting and exceeding that fantasy."

Wow. Apparently he'd been listening more closely to Dri's speechifying than he'd realized. It had him grinning an taking a sip of his club soda to kinda-sorta cover it up. "And I've been Security since before the service opened up. Benedict was her first hire, I was her second." And yeah, he felt a little bit of pride about that, even if there were other factors involved. "If you end up hired, we'll end up working together a bit right at first, getting you up to speed with our protocols and getting you set up with a set of safewords and so on. We monitor the safety of our escorts very closely. Beating up hookers is so gauche."

Five figures? His contact had not been exaggerating; the folks at this place really did get paid. Yet the question was also just how much of those figures would be going to his pocket. Henry gathered that that was another question that he should think to ask Adrianna, rather than her chief of security. He did pick up on the fact that the man was rather proud to answer that he has been here for quite some time, professional pride, nice to see that some people had it. It did imply that the man enjoyed his work – and a place like this could not be that bad then could it? Well he’d have to make up his mind once he met the vampire woman.

“Do all…arrangements made by the Rose require safe words?” he asked as he leaned on the side of the couch, rather intrigued by the information that he was getting from the Head of Security. “Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind some kink, I’m merely trying to get a grasp on what kind of customer base you guys cater too. Do you deal in any specific kind of kink or do you arrange things on a customer by customer basis?”

“Protocols?” he inquired when he heard the word. He was not quite sure what the other meant the one with the ‘g’ in it but he was fairly sure that it dealt with physical violence “Feel free to elaborate on them” he said as he reached for his half empty drink. He was rather engrossed in the conversation that he did not notice just how much he had actually drinking – not that it really mattered, even as a human Henry had always had a high tolerance towards alcohol, as a lycanthrope it took considerable amounts of drink to even make him feel tipsy.

“What about you? Ever got to work in the ‘field’ as it were? Ever want to?”

A quiet laugh, Jack shook his head. "Not that kind of safewords, though those do come up now and then. No, I mean ways--not always words--for you to let security know that things might be going wrong. Or, alternatively, to come in with guns blazing because shit's gone bad. Not that we've ever actually had to do that, but better safe than sorry."

He smiled and leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms loosely across his chest. Again it pulled up the sleeves of his jacket, showing that weird scarring. "And no, I've never worked in the industry. But Adrianna knows that if the house ever needs me to, I will. Frankly?" The smile flattened into a grin, "I'm not pretty enough that I expect it to come up. Compared to the folks that work here, I'm just not all that."

Henry quirked an eyebrow at the man. As if he had said something funny – only to realize that he had actually done so, accidentally though. A smile tugged on his lips as he put by the now almost empty glass back onto the glass table that was in front of his legs. The fact that they had security around, and a competent chief thereof, was comforting. Not because Henry needed protection, he was an Alpha lycanthrope – he could defend himself in a pinch, but rather because it showed that the lot was organized. That was most employees would look in an employer though - competence and this showed that they had some. Not that they had displayed anything else up on to this point.

“That’s good to know” he said mildly bemused by the image of Jack storming a room gun drawn ready to shoot some offender “Does that mean that all dates end or happen here, or that most of the escorts get their personal security details?”

The information that followed, or rather the implication, was just as curious as was the actual content thereof. Henries eyes briefly flickered across the man as he once more noticed the marks on his skin, this time though he realized what they were: scars. Odds were that there was a story behind those.

Several questions popped into his head, none of which he should probably ask. He focused on the other aspect that was just revealed to him. He faced the man, giving him a rather obvious once over as he did so. “I guess that depends on the type of pretty that you’re looking for…” he said rather absent mindedly“…you’re not conventional pretty, neither am I for that matter, I guess you fall more into the ruggedly handsome section” Henry continued talking.

“Plenty of the ladies that like that too” he offered his thoughts “Or guys, pending which way you swing” he added a moment later. “The suit is not bad” Henry continued with his appraisal “Very official looking, but I’d hazard to guess that it’s not quite your usual style?” not that Henry had any actual knowledge about Jack’s style. But he knew enough to recognize when people felt comfortable in their own skin, and while Jack certainly seemed rather confident, there was just something…off about him. Well that and he doubted that the man spent his days in suits.

That little tell that an experienced eye might pick up on. For instance his demenour and his attire simply clashed, in other words Jack did not seem to act the way he dressed. Or perhaps he was dead wrong and about to be told so.

"No," Dri said as she finally walked into the room, dressed in a boho chic little ivory dress, hair left down to fall freely about her shoulders. It made her look more than a little harmless and was, not that either of them would know it, in homage to the way Amelia and her servants had always loved playing human doll with her. "Not all dates happen here or need to end here, though it is more convenient for all involved."

She'd been outside of the room listening for a good five minutes, something of which she was certain Jack had been aware, it had the smile she gave him taking on an amused quality amid the warmth. "Thank you for keeping Mr. Doyle company."

To Henry, she added, "I do apologize for being so late," the soft hint of England in her voice, though she hadn't lived there since she was a very small little girl, as she walked forward and extended her hand, "I hope you won't hold it against me."

Henries rather merciless gaze, which had been fully focused onto Jack, was drawn away as he heard a female voice. At the door stood a woman, tall, gracious and dressed in what seemed the least threatening manner possible was, presumably Adrianna. The vampire in question, or so he had been told, was the owner of the Rose and quite possibly his future employer. In other words Henry really needed to be at his best behavior.

“Not at all, your head of security was more than gracious enough to keep me company” he said in friendly terms as he stood up to greet the woman. He took the offered hand and placed both of his around it, giving the woman a firm handshake. Henry gave her a rather warm smile as he did so. “He was also kind enough to answer some of mine questions” he added as he let go of her hand “I do hope you won’t hold it against him if I choose to ask a few more of you?”

Henry waited for Adrianna to move and to choose a spot to sit before he set down again. It was just a polite thing to do, and Henry was not about to be impolite to his potential employer, let alone cross her.

“We were just discussing how colorful the Rose’s clients could be and what was expected of me” he explained and summed up the conversation between himself and Jack “I assume that you’d like to weigh on that matter?” he jested as he posed a rather rhetorical question.
