The frown deepened. "They were showing porn in there. And it seems people were acting out their favorite scenes against the pool tables." Okay, that settled it, he was actually pissed. "Which was one of several reasons why she wasn't supposed to be there. Which she knew. And did it anyway. And then tried to distract me with pickles."

"Technically speaking, it's not one of the reasons I knew," she pointed out, "I didn't hear about it 'til I got there."

"Should probably quit while you're ahead, kid," Wil said, seeing his brother's face and the way it was sort of...mottling.

Abby gave a huff, crossing her arms over her chest. "I said I was sorry." And she even mostly was. She was also smart enough not to tell him she could see porn any time she wanted. It was what the internet was for. There was even a song.

It wasn't the porn that was bothering Bobby, it was the live-action recreations. And, specifically, the possibility that someone would try to draw Abby into one. Which was not happening. Ever. Were there any all-girls Catholic colleges in Seattle?

He shook his head and decided on a subject change. "How's work? You still trying to find rational explanations for a city-wide eruption of gang violence?" It was half a joke, the default explanation for any preternatural upheaval.

"Not since the last one," Wil said with a tight smile before taking two drinks and shaking his head.

"You mean the wolves," Abby said, more than asked, since she was still sitting here and all.

"Yeah, I mean the wolves," Wil nodded, though he gave her an apologetic smile, since he knew her background. To Bobby, he went on, "Still trying to re-staff the people we lost, get through a giant mound of paperwork. Oh, and find a cat burglar. Who is actually a cat."

"Cool." This from Abby, who clearly approved.

He laughed. "I think you lack moral fiber. Or at least the discretion not to root for the bad guys when the cop's not in the room. I'm definitely reconsidering Catholic school. Maybe that one Wil put Tish into." He'd definitely heard Tish complaining about the nuns there. All to the good, in his personal opinion.

For the first time that night, Abby finally looked scared. "You wouldn't," she breathed.

"Oh," Wil said, hiding his own amusement, "He would. You know we were raised by Priests? Bob'll bitch and moan about it and all, but he liked it. Thinks it gave us a fine, moral standing a lot of people don't have these days. You like plaid?"

"I would," he confirmed, meaning it. "College is coming up fast, Seattle U is a Jesuit university. Very good school. Daily chapel before classes, the whole thing." He'd do it, too.

Wil had to admit, he was kind of impressed. Admit to himself, anyway, he'd never actually say it out loud. But Abby was looking well and truly cowed now. He'd only known her fifteen minutes but didn't think it possible.

"What's the right thing to say here to avoid the nuns?" Abby asked. There were still nuns, right? She did not want to find out.

Bobby was at least kind enough to dictate. "Burglary is not cool. Sneaking out is not my new favorite hobby. Pushing my luck is only funny for a little while."

"But it was a cat - " at Bobby's unamused look, which by the way he was really good at, she sighed and caved. "Okay, not cool. I'll stay in. Until you take me out, okay?"

"Masterful," Wil said under his breath.

Bobby shot his brother a look too. "And in return, Wil will start watching the impounds for a car. Something safe rather than cool, with good suspension. It's going to be longer than you think before that hip is at a hundred percent, you're better off in a land yacht with cushy seats and very, very large crumple zones. That last being for my peace of mind."

"Holy shit, are you kidding me?" she asked, bouncing and then wincing because bouncing was still a bad idea. "A car?" She looked to Wil for confirmation.

"Apparently so. I'll see what I can find. There're probably several from the old cruiser conversion still up for grabs."

"Wow," Abby said, sighing happily, "I so won the foster family lottery." She actually really believed that, too. Just like she believed that she was staying here for a very long time.

She would be. In some unexamined way, introducing her to Wil had been the final test. Or, not test, but hurdle that had to be worked out before it was decided. She needed a home, he had one, and for a kid who'd grown up in an orphanage it was unthinkable that he would withhold. Besides, she was funny and maddening and dangerously smart, and maybe not what he'd have said he hoped for in a daughter, but now that she was here? She was staying.

None of which he said right now. What he in fact said was, "Make sure and remember that when you start PT and gun training. And SAT courses." She was going to college, that was non-optional.

"Bobby," she groaned, dragging his name out the way other kids would say 'daaaaad', and flopping back on the pillow. She didn't wince that time because it was her own fault, but she did look at him and ask, "Ibuprofen?" She was half afraid he'd tell her to suck it up as part of her punishment for sneaking out. Speaking of which....

"So am I grounded or something?" she asked, "The suspense is kind of killing me." She and her Mom had had a system worked out when it came to punishment, but Abby didn't expect him to operate the same way. That would be ridiculous.

"You have a broken hip, how much more grounded could you be?" He'd been thinking about this since they were heading home. "You're gonna be picking up a college placement/SAT online program this week, I'll pick it out and you'll finish it with high marks or do it again. Should keep you from getting bored."

He looked seriously at her. "We're going to go rat-style with this. You screw up, you work harder. You screw up again, you get still more work. When you get back on your feet that'll include training classes, for now you're stuck with studying." It was the best solution he'd been able to come up with; a sort of discipline that didn't seem too 'parental' to him. He was still hesitant to cross the line to being 'Dadlike' even if they danced along it all the time.
